Persistent ringing or buzzing can make falling or staying asleep difficult.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Concentration issues<\/strong>. The constant noise can interfere with the ability to focus on tasks, affecting work or study.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emotional distress<\/strong>. One 2023 study found that tinnitus patients show an increase in psychological symptoms, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9917824\/#:~:text=Tinnitus%20is%20a%20common%20symptom,are%20increased%20in%20tinnitus%20patients.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anxiety and depression<\/a>. Some causes of tinnitus include hearing loss, ototoxic medication, ear infections or blocked Eustachian tubes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hearing Loss<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With hearing loss, the disruption in the sound transmission process can cause the ear to generate its own noise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/tinnitus#:~:text=One%20leading%20theory%20is%20that,your%20brain%20that%20process%20sound.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resulting in tinnitus<\/a>. The permanence of hearing loss-induced tinnitus depends on the extent of the damage. Temporary tinnitus may occur after exposure to loud noise, known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4988324\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">temporary threshold shift<\/a>, but if the hearing loss is profound and permanent, the tinnitus is likely to be permanent as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ototoxic Medications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ototoxic medications can damage the ear, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/hearing\/ototoxic-medications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing loss, balance issues and tinnitus<\/a>. Medication-induced tinnitus can be temporary or permanent, depending on the duration of use and the extent of damage. In some cases, tinnitus resolves once the medication is discontinued, but in others, it may persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infections and Blocked Eustachian Tubes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ear conditions like infections and blocked Eustachian tubes are common causes of temporary tinnitus. Ear infections occur when bacteria or viruses infect the space behind the eardrum, causing fluid retention and pain. This fluid retention can <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8613-ear-infection-otitis-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">block the ear canal and lead to tinnitus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, blocked Eustachian tubes may arise when allergies, viruses or bacterial infections cause <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22527-eustachian-tube-dysfunction#symptoms-and-causes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inflammation and mucus blockage<\/a>\u2013leading to temporary tinnitus and hearing loss. Infection or Eustachian tube-related tinnitus will typically resolve as the root cause clears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Management Options for Tinnitus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Permanent tinnitus has no known cure. Instead, your audiologist will likely recommend one of the following symptom management options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sound masking tools<\/strong>. Sound masking works by playing or amplifying external sounds to mask the internal noise of tinnitus. Effective tools may include <a href=\"https:\/\/speechandhearingassoc.com\/hearing-aids\/benefits-of-hearing-aids\/\">hearing aids<\/a>, fans or white noise machines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Therapy<\/strong>.
