May is Better Hearing and Speech Month and Speech and Hearing Associates would like to help you learn the facts and identify the signs of hearing difficulty.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Signs of Hearing Difficulty in\u00a0Children:<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has a lack of attention to sounds (birth-1 year)<\/li>\n<li>Does not respond when you call his\/her name<\/li>\n<li>Does not follow simple directions<\/li>\n<li>Shows delays in speech and language development (birth-3 years)<\/li>\n<li>Has difficulty hearing in background noise<\/li>\n<li>Frequently responds with \u201chuh?\u201d or \u201cwhat?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Has difficulty achieving academically, especially in reading and math<\/li>\n<li>Socially isolates his\/herself and is unhappy in school<\/li>\n<li>Personal listening devices set at high volume levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Signs of Hearing Difficulty in\u00a0Adults:<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is Inattentive<\/li>\n<li>Complains that \u201ceveryone mumbles\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Sets the TV at high volume levels<\/li>\n<li>Has trouble following conversation in noise or when two or more people are talking at the same time<\/li>\n<li>Has problems hearing on the telephone<\/li>\n<li>Frequently asks people to repeat<\/li>\n<li>Avoids conversation<\/li>\n<li>Socially isolates his\/herself<\/li>\n<li>Shows signs of depression and\/or frustration<\/li>\n<li>Complains that speech is loud enough, just not clear enough<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans has hearing loss in at least one ear?
