Speech Therapy Martinsville

Our NJ licensed and nationally certified speech-language pathologists (also known as speech therapists or SLPs) evaluate and treat a wide range of speech and language disorders among both children and adults. Evaluations and therapy are covered by Medicare for adults over age 65 and by most commercial plans for younger adults and children. Typically, we see children as early as 18 months of age, and adults at any age. Our friendly and helpful staff will help you determine if you have coverage for our services and help guide you through the process. We routinely evaluate and treat children and adults with delayed speech and language, indistinct or unclear speech, aphasia, apraxia, articulation/phonological disorder, central auditory processing disorder, language processing disorder, cleft palate, cognitive-communication disorder, fluency (stuttering) disorder, laryngectomy, neurogenic disorder, swallowing disorder (dysphagia) and tongue thrust. Our SLPs have experience working with children with selective mutism, autism, pragmatic language weakness, hearing impairments, and other communicative challenges. We also work with adults who would like to eliminate or modify foreign accents. Many of our experienced speech-language pathologists also speak languages other than English, including Creole, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian.

The initial appointment is typically an evaluation for the purpose of identifying if a delay or disorder exists, and if speech therapy is recommended. In many cases, we find the child is developing normally and we can make some suggestions for home stimulation when speech therapy is not indicated. When we do recommend therapy, the speech language pathologist will develop a treatment plan that is unique for that patient. Speech therapy may be recommended for once, twice or three times a week. Some special treatment programs, such as Lee Silverman Voice Therapy (LSVT) recommended for adults with Parkinson’s Disease, take place intensively: four times a week for four weeks.

Our speech therapists routinely participate in continuing education. In addition to monthly professional development we provide on-site, our SLPs have attended specialized training to be able to provide therapeutic services including: PROMPT, LSVT, Speech Easy, PECs, Hear Builders, Hanen, and more.

In addition to our individual speech therapy sessions, various groups are formed as needed. We run social communication groups for children to teach important pragmatic, interaction, and communication skills within a structured environment. Fluency groups are formed to provide people who stutter with opportunities to practice their fluency strategies with a variety of communication partners, as well as share experiences, suggestions, and provide support. Adult groups for those who have suffered from strokes or head injuries allow those with aphasia and/or dysarthria opportunities to practice effective communication, learn strategies to communicate, and enjoy a social environment.

For individuals who cannot communicate on their own, our speech language pathologists can help find the appropriate speech-generating device. We conduct Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) evaluations and can recommend, trial, and help you obtain the appropriate high tech or low-tech device suitable to improve quality of life.
