When wearing hearing aids, do you hear but not understand? Say huh or what? Have difficulty following a conversation? Struggle to remember what someone just said to you? Have trouble keeping up or think others talk too fast or mumble?

Wearing hearing aids is only the first step to better hearing and even the most state-of-the art devices can’t solve all hearing difficulties on their own. Hearing aids enhance hearing, but it takes training to enhance understanding.

Your audiologist has already assessed your hearing and fit you with hearing aids. But now it’s time to team up with a speech-language pathologist who specializes in improving understanding and communication. Together, they work to implement strategies and solutions to ensure what you hear becomes what you understand. This is Auditory Training.

Speech and Hearing Associates’ unique auditory training program is a structured and in depth supplement to the hearing aids you already have. This two month program includes practical exercises, activities, strategies, and education to address hearing in a variety of settings. Like physical therapy following a knee replacement, this combination of equipment and exercises is what will lead to successful and enjoyable communication.

Through auditory training we set goals and teach strategies to:

1. Understand and manage your hearing loss.
2. Increase the ability to process, understand and recall rapid speech.
3. Help improve speech understanding in noise or other challenging listening environments.
4. Learn or improve speech reading skills.
5. Assess difficult listening situations and modify environments for better communication.
6. Develop strategies with family members to make communication easier.
7. Educate others about your hearing loss and listening needs.

If you still feel isolated and withdrawn during conversations in noisy environments, even with hearing aids, come to Speech and Hearing Associates. It’s time to try auditory training.
