Speech & Hearing Associates offers virtual and in person support groups and individual therapy for those with fluency and stuttering disorders. Stuttering is a communication disorder involving disruptions or disfluencies in a person’s speech. It can be very difficult for people who stutter to speak, making it difficult to communicate effectively with others.

In addition to individual therapy, we offer group therapy for people who stutter. During these group sessions, children and adults have the opportunity to practice their goals with similar-aged peers in a supportive, guided environment.

In the group, the speech-language pathologist creates a focus on learning and implementing strategies and techniques that make speech easier, helps the participants to experience positive feedback during speaking, and encourages the development of positive emotions and attitudes about talking.

The group therapy provides an accepting environment in which spontaneous communication exchanges are encouraged and promoted.

Some of the specific goals and strategies include: reducing the frequency of stuttering, decreasing tension during moments of stuttering, reducing avoidance of words or social situations, and educating the participants so they understand the mechanics that underlie stuttering.
