Speech and Hearing Associates announces groups for persons with Aphasia.
The Aphasia therapy group will bring together people facing similar difficulties. The group will allow members to share experiences and advice, while helping the members cope better as they make connections with others facing similar challenges. The group will discuss topics associated with aphasia. Group members can compare therapy goals, treatment plans, and compensatory strategies to get new ideas of what could work best for them. This is a safe and fun place to practice and support others in achieving communication goals.
What are some of the signs and symptoms of Aphasia?
A person with Aphasia may experience any of the following symptoms depending on the extent and location of the damage: trouble speaking or “getting words out”, difficulty finding words, problems understanding what others say, trouble with reading, writing, or math, increased difficulty processing long words and infrequently used words.

Let’s talk about Stroke and Aphasia
Aphasia is a language disorder that affects the ability to communicate. It most often is caused by strokes that occur in areas of the brain that control speech and language.
Some Types of Aphasia:
- Broca’s aphasia- Difficulty getting words out. The person knows what he/she wants to say, but can’t find the right words.
- Wernicke’s aphasia- Significant difficulty understanding what is being said and controlling meaningful speech.
- Global aphasia- May be completely unable to speak, name objects, repeat phrases or follow commands.
Speech and Hearing Associates also provides Speech Evaluations to diagnose Aphasia.
